Imphal, Dec 12: The Manipur government has stated that identification of illegal migrants/refugees will continue across the state including Kamjong and other places where there were recent reports of more people coming in from Myanmar.
After the clashes between the military Junta and pro-democracy forces in Myanmar, people are coming towards Kamjong, which shares 109 km of border with Myanmar.
Meanwhile, the Central government has been keeping a close eye on the influx of people from Myanmar side to the northeastern states. “Hundreads of refugees have entered in our state. We are taking the biometric details,” said an official.
Manipur BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh stated on X (formerly Twitter), “Many have been asking if the State Government has been identifying illegal migrants across the State. I would like to reaffirm to all concerned people, yes, all identification work is being taken up by the State Government, that is why it was extended upto March 2024. Thus, all such identification of illegal migrants/refugees are being done/will be done across the State including Kamjong and other places where there were recent reports of more people coming in from Myanmar.”
Singh shared a notification where the time frame of collecting biometric details of illegal immigrants is extended by a year by the Union Home Ministry.
Over 38,000 people from Myanmar have taken refuge in Mizoram since the military coup in February 2021. Another 1,000 people from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh had also come to Mizoram.
Last month, following the escalating gun battle between the Army and the People’s Defence Force (PDF), thousands of people from Myanmar took shelter in Mizoram.
