Guwahati, June 17: Four pilgrims from Assam, who had embarked on the sacred journey to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for the Hajj, passed away just a day before Eid, leaving their families and communities in deep sorrow.
The Northeast Hajj Committee officials have identified the deceased as three individuals from the Barak Valley and one from the Barpeta district of Assam. The pilgrims who lost their lives are Jarina Begum from Barpeta, Salaha Begum Barbhuiya from Hailakandi, Saif Uddin Barbhuiya, and Jasir Uddin Mazumdar, both from the Cachar district of Barak Valley.
Reports indicate that Jarina Begum, who hailed from Howly town in Barpeta and had travelled with her husband for the pilgrimage, fell ill after completing the Hajj rituals. She was admitted to a hospital where she eventually succumbed while receiving treatment. The causes of death for the other three pilgrims from Barak Valley remain unknown.
Nekibur Zaman, chairman of the Northeast Hajj Committee, responded to the news by alleging negligence on the part of the Central Hajj Committee. He accused the committee of failing to prioritize the welfare of Hajj pilgrims from the northeastern region.
The annual Hajj pilgrimage for residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states commenced on May 16, with approximately 3,937 pilgrims from the region participating in the journey to Mecca. In 2023, a total of 3,454 pilgrims from the Northeast undertook the Hajj, during which six pilgrims sadly passed away due to various illnesses while in the holy city of Mecca.
