Fresh clash on Assam-Meghalaya border; Karbis attack Jaintia villagers with bow and arrow, catapults

Shillong, Sept 26: Fresh clashes between the Karbi and Pnar (Jaintia) communities have erupted once again in Lapangap village along the inter-state border in West Jaintia Hills District on Tuesday.

Local villagers alleged that hundreds of Karbi people attacked the pnar farmers with bows and arrows in Lapangap village while they were working in their paddy fields. They also alleged that the Karbi people were also using catapults.

Confirming the incident, Waheh Shnong (headman) of Lapangap village Deimonmi Lyngdoh said that the farmers had gone to their paddy fields early morning as it was time for harvesting. However, they were attacked with catapults and bows and arrows by the Karbi people, who were hiding near the paddy fields.

“Soon after that tension escalated when farmers rushed to the village and told the others about what had happened. Angered by the incident, villagers also went to the paddy fields and started retaliating against the Karbi. The incident lasted the whole day,” he said.

The headman said that one Meghalaya police personnel narrowly escaped an arrow coming from the Karbi side.

He stated that police from both Assam and Meghalaya were present during the incident but unfortunately, Assam police were struggling to control the Karbi people from attacking the Pnar people. Later, the situation calmed down and is currently under control.

Waheh Shnong of Lapangap urged the district administration of the West Jaintia Hills District to intervene and provide protection to the people.
