Ganol River- a waterway in West Garo Hills is in grave danger
Tura, June 20: In the recent pictures, it is seen that upstream at the Rongram market, mounds of trash and waste clog the riverbanks and spill into the water. As the river flows down from the market, the pollution also gets swept along with it straight into the massive Ganol hydroelectric project. And once through there, the contaminated water ends up getting piped right back into the homes. An endless cycle putting thousands of lives at risk each time they turn on the tap.
If the dumping of waste from the market continues, what was once a natural blessing will become a man-made curse and will affect the people and the ecosystem of the life-giving river. As we recall, a week ago, fresh-water otters (Matram) were seen for the first time in the Ganol river.
