Shillong, July 6: Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma on Thursday addressed the G20 conclave on the theme Nature Solves in Shillong.
CM Conrad said the meeting has brought diverse minds and green intellectual to find possible sustainable blue prints for the future.
While addressing the G20 conclave, CM said, “the people of Meghalaya have been deeply connected to nature since ages. We are blessed with rich biodiversity and our forefathers have been protecting this heaven for ages.”
“Our sustainable culture and lifestyle has always been in harmony with Mother Earth. We are all humbled by the wisdom and harmony that nature demonstrates, and we take a great pride of it,” Sangma said.

“Communities of Meghalaya can pioneer the conservation based lifestyle for the world and create a new social and economic order,” he added.
Conrad Sangma on Sacred GrovesÂ
Highlighting Meghalaya’s Sacred Groves, he said these are holy and divine parts of forest and represent the age-old tradition of environmental conservation based on indigenous knowledge and culture.
He said there are about 100 Sacred Groves, spanning over 10,000 hectares and more than 150 of community owned Reserved forests covering over 2,500 Hectares in the state of Meghalaya, which are preserved by our communities with utmost reverence.
Conrad further said, “our government has initiated Green Meghalaya, one of its unique kind, through which the communities are rewarded for preserving and protecting the natural cover. We aim to preserve 2 lakh hectares of forest cover over the next 5 years, through this program.”

Well-being for future generations
Talking about the future generation, he said “as we deliberate on the new framework for our sustainable future, let us not forget that we are custodians of this planet, entrusted with the responsibility to ensure its well-being for future generations.”
“Nature’s solutions are waiting to be discovered, and it is our duty to embrace them wholeheartedly,” Sangma said.
He further said, “our mascots – Pa’Khla (Clouded Leopard) and Maimai (Hill Myna) demonstrates our rich natural diversity as we have embarked on a mission to create awareness on conservation in schools and colleges across the State.”
