6th All Garo hills Chess Championship held at Don Bosco school, Parish Hall in Tura

Tura, July 6: The sixth All Garo hills Chess Championship was held at Don Bosco school, Parish Hall on Thursday at Rongkhon, Tura. The chess championship was organised by Garo Hills Chess Association.

The Chess Championship started at 11 am on Thursday and will conclude on Friday (July 7).

For the chess championship, a total of 100 participants had registered out of which around 30 are school students.

About Joining Fees

The joining fees for participating in the Chess Championship are-

Rs.300 for college level up-to adults

Rs. 250 for school students and kids

What will winners get? 

The winners of the championship will get a cash prize, a trophy and also a certificate.

Who will be eligible to participate at State level?

After this championship, the top 12 participants will be eligible to participate at State level. Following this, top four participants will go to National level championship. This norms are set by the State Chess Association.

While speaking to Hub News, Tartush R Marak, Sr. Member GHCA said, “the response from the parents were very good and 100 have registered out which many students have come.”

“This success is only because of the opening of Chess Arena in DC Park by previous DC Swapnil Tembe.,” he added.

He also said, “chess can bring changes in the society and eradicate bad environment and bad habits which nowadays we can see. It helps a person to have the habit of problem solving, having patience, critical decision making, etc.”

The event also witnessed many parents accompanying the students.

AN Sangma, HOD Medical Electronics Polytechnic College Tura while peaking to the Hub News said, “My son is in class 8, he is very interested in Chess. I will be very happy If he takes it up as a profession.”

Prabha Lohar, Asst. Teacher at Denovo School Beldarpara,Tura said, “Past 2 year I have seen my son being very interested in Chess. I didn’t even know he won championship in School. He studies a Class 5 student and is from Sherwood school.”

Anita Shah, Housewife said, “From young age he played chess with me and his goal was to defeat me. Then one day he saw an interview of Mangnes Carlson, he now wants to become a Champion.”

In two days, the Garo hills region will produce new top 12 who will compete in State champions to get the seat at the top 4 for National Championship.
