Boko, July 25: A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district late Friday night, highlighting the escalating human-elephant conflict along the Assam–Meghalaya border.

The victim, identified as Pichuki Rabha, a resident of Lahapara village in Belguri, was attacked after a herd of wild elephants strayed into the area in search of food, triggering panic among villagers.

According to local residents, the elephants entered Belguri village late at night, spreading fear as they moved through the locality. Pichuki Rabha was caught in the sudden rampage and sustained fatal injuries in the attack.

The incident has left the border village in shock, with residents expressing growing concern over frequent elephant incursions that pose a recurring threat to lives, crops, and property in the region.

Forest and local authorities have taken note of the incident. The latest fatality has once again underscored the worsening human-elephant conflict in the West Garo Hills border belt, prompting renewed calls for stronger mitigation measures, including improved early warning systems, habitat management and enhanced protection for vulnerable villages.
