Communities must trust each other before peace returns to Manipur: Conrad Sangma

Imphal, July 25: Building trust among Manipur’s communities must be the first priority before lasting peace can return to the violence-hit state, National People’s Party (NPP) national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said on Saturday.

Concluding his two-day visit to Manipur, Sangma said the state continues to face a serious situation and stressed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue and continuous engagement among all communities.

“We need to make trust-building among all communities our first and highest priority if the state is to move towards meaningful and lasting peace. This is possible only through dialogue and engagement with every community,” the Meghalaya Chief Minister said.

He said employment generation for the youth must receive equal attention, adding that economic growth and job creation are equally important for restoring normalcy in Manipur.

Sangma also said the NPP has consistently raised the issue of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) with both the Centre and the Manipur government over the past year, while acknowledging that facilitating their safe return home remains a major challenge.

The party, he said, would continue to pursue the issue with the Centre to ensure displaced families receive the necessary humanitarian assistance.

“I would once again urge all concerned to continue engaging constructively with the displaced people so they can gradually return to normal life. Let us hope that, in time, everything will return to normal,” Sangma said while concluding the press conference in Imphal.

During the visit, Sangma inaugurated the NPP’s new state headquarters in Imphal and held a series of organisational meetings with party leaders, legislators and workers to strengthen the party’s base in Manipur. He also met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to discuss issues related to the state’s development and the party’s activities.

“I am happy to see the response and cooperation from the people and our party workers. We will continue expanding our organisation in Manipur. We will contest the coming Assembly elections independently, based on our party’s agenda, principles and identity,” Sangma said.
