Guwahati, Nov 26: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has directed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to resolve all obstacles promptly. He assured proactive measures to maintain and restore National Highways in Assam, making them traffic-worthy and advancing the project’s completion timeline.
This development brings renewed hope for smoother connectivity between Jorhat and Dibrugarh, a vital route for Assam’s infrastructure and economy.
Responding to concerns raised by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma with Nitin Gadkari over delays in the construction of the Jorhat-Dibrugarh National Highway, Sarma shared that Gadkari has informed him about the onboarding of 11 contractors to accelerate the completion of the 127-km highway stretch. The Chief Minister thanked Gadkari for the swift response and expressed hope for the project’s early completion, emphasizing its importance for Assam’s infrastructure and economic connectivity.
In a letter dated November 1, 2024, and received by the Assam CM on November 12, Gadkari acknowledged significant delays caused by challenges such as land acquisition issues, shortages of raw materials, including 12 lakh cubic meters of earth, 11 lakh cubic meters of sand, and 5 lakh metric tons of boulders. Another issue was the underperformance by contractors.
To overcome these hurdles, the project has been divided into smaller segments, with multiple contractors engaged to ensure more efficient execution. The highway will feature 9 Vehicular Underpasses (VUPs), 6 Pedestrian Underpasses (PUPs), and a flyover.
