Shillong, June 26: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) will soon decide on the candidate for the upcoming bye election to the Gambegre Assembly seat. As many as ten aspirants are eyeing for the party ticket.
“However, people are demanding for Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s wife Dr Mehtab Chandee A Sangma to be party candidate,” an NPP leader informed on Tuesday.
The bye-election is necessitated following the recent resignation of Saleng A Sangma, who was elected as new Tura MP. Saleng unseated CM’s sister Agatha K Sangma by a massive margin of over 1.55 lakh votes.
The other aspirants for the seat include CM’s elder brother and former cabinet minister James Sangma, and sister Agatha Sangma besides sitting MDCs.
“The party will soon take a call on the matter,” the party leader said.

Congress working president and former cabinet minister Deborah Marak is among them.
Further, sources informed that the opposition Trinamool Congress is likely to field former Rangsakona legislator Zenith M Sangma’s wife as candidate for the Gambegre seat.
