‘Gambegre to be most challenging election before 2028 state polls’

Must read

Tura, July 10: Congress in Meghalaya is anticipating a tight contest for the upcoming by-elections to Gambegre constituency that has been vacated by Saleng A Sangma following his victory in the Tura Lok Sabha seat defeating Agatha K Sangma of the NPP.

Meghalaya Congress president Vincent H. Pala said that this (Gambegre) would be the most challenging election for the party after the victory in Tura as the Congress looks to further consolidate its position in its former bastion of Garo Hills while the ruling NPP tries to halt its decline.

He made this remark in Tura on Wednesday while addressing Congress supporters during the felicitation for new party MP of Tura, Saleng A Sangma, at the district auditorium.

“I know it will be tough but I trust the wisdom of the people of Garo Hills that they will give us an MLA from Garo Hills just as they have given us a new MP,” an optimistic Pala said.

New Tura MP Saleng A Sangma also said that the NPP government in the state has been shaken by the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and Congress will have to further consolidate its hold in the Garo Hills and the Gambegre elections would be a major battle between the two parties.

“They (NPP) have now realized the problems of Gambegre. People in my constituency were receiving electricity bills even when there was no power. Now the government has installed a transformer,” pointed Saleng .

He also claimed that a Congress government in the near future would transform the health and education sector in the state.

“Change has happened in this election and we need to take this further,” said MPCC working president Deborah C Marak at the felicitation programme.

She claimed that peoples’ perception towards MP, MLA and MDC elections have dramatically changed in the state, particularly Garo Hills, with people turning away freebies doled out by politicians to seek votes.
