Tura, Aug 11: Days after Chanda M. Sangma, accused of brutally raping and killing a 12-year-old in Garo Hills, was arrested, the Garo civil societies and pressure groups organised a candlelight vigil on Thursday demanding justice for the victim.
The candlelight vigil was organised by GSU, AAYWO, AYMBS AYWO, CRF, AHAM, FKJGP, GSMC, FAF, etc. of Chibinang regional units at Chandigre Field. They not only demanded justice for the minor girl but also condemned the brutal murder of the 12-year-old, the only daughter of the family.
GSU president Hamit Marak expressed his sincere condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased. He said, “We express our sincere condolences to the family members and relatives of the victim in this hour of grief.” He also said that the accused person was a former member of ASAK, and this is not the first time that he has committed a crime. He is already facing trial in a rape case that was charge-sheeted.
The candlelight march was taken out in memory of the Chibinang village rape and murder victim, demanding justice for her.
The girl was brutally raped and killed by a 32-year old man, identified as Chanda M. Sangma, on August 1, 2023, in the village of Jangrapara West Garo Hills district.
The accused is a resident of the Mikdikgre area of Baghmara, South Garo Hills, but has settled in Jangrapara Bikonggre village, West Garo Hills.
The incident took place when the girl was alone at home and her parents went out to attend a funeral in the village.
According to the police, the girl’s throat was slit, and her head was almost decapitated.
