The girl was raped and killed by a 32-year old man, identified as Chanda M. Sangma, on August 1, 2023, in the village of Jangrapara West Garo Hills district.
The candlelight vigil in Shillong was organized by concerned residents who wanted to express their solidarity with the people of Manipur. They called for an end to the violence and unrest that have plagued the region, emphasising the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution.Â
A minute silence was also observed by the people to pay their respect and honour to the fallen tribal Kuki heroes while a prayer for the martyr's family was also held.
The event took place at the Tura Super Market ground, where participants displayed placards bearing messages such as "We Pray for Peace in Manipur," "It's Time to Stop the Violence," and "Love Heals, Hatred Hurts, and Violence Never Solves - Dialogue Does."
