Must read

Tura, July 22: A candlelight vigil was held on Monday evening in Mahadeo village to mourn the brutal death of a 15-year-old girl and to demand swift justice in a case that has deeply shaken the South Garo Hills region.

Organised by ACHIK South Garo Hills, the vigil brought together residents, student unions, traditional leaders and concerned citizens who lit candles and carried placards bearing messages such as “End Violence Against Girls” and “Silence is Complicity.”

According to the organisation, the victim had been reported missing on July 9. Her body was discovered several days later in a remote forested area, partially buried under a pile of rock.

Speakers at the vigil condemned the brutality of the act and expressed grave concern over the delayed police response.

ACHIK South Garo Hills, in a strongly worded statement, criticised the lack of prompt action by law enforcement and urged the authorities to ensure a transparent and time-bound investigation. The organisation also called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and appropriate financial compensation for the victim’s family.

South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Sailendra Bamaniya confirmed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the case.
