Must read

Williamnagar, July 21: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), East Zone on Monday organized a solemn candlelight vigil in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Williamnagar, in memory of Late Rikkambe Sangma, who was brutally murdered on July 18 in the Samgong area.

Rikkambe was allegedly killed by James R. Sangma, a man she was once in a relationship with but had distanced herself from due to his troubling behaviour. He is also an absconder in a pending POCSO case and remains at large, with police actively searching for him.

The vigil saw participation from organisations such as the Mother’s Union, Mother’s Federation, ADIL, AAYF, AHAM, the student councils of Loyola College and Williamnagar Government College, local residents, and the victim’s family. Pastor Talseng A. Sangma led the vigil with prayers and Scripture reading, followed by candle lighting initiated by him and the victim’s father.

Speaking to Hub News, GSU East Zone General Secretary Alex D. Shira expressed deep anguish and blamed systemic negligence. According to him, the victim had approached the One Stop Centre (OSC) in Williamnagar on the same day seeking protection from threats issued by James. Though the Women Police Station was informed, no shelter or escort was provided. Shockingly, the girls were reportedly given ₹40 and sent toward the accused’s known location, without security. Rikkambe was later found hacked to death near his home.

The GSU has demanded a magisterial inquiry, ₹10 lakh compensation, and strict action against any official found negligent. They also met with the Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the suspension of the Women Police Station In-Charge and assured that a detailed investigation is underway.
