Garo Hills boys shine at State Boxing Championship despite limited training facilities, bag 4 gold medals

Must read

Shillong, Aug 10: The young boxers from Garo Hills delivered an impressive performance by clinching six medals at the State Sub-Junior and Junior Boys and Girls Boxing Championship 2024, held from August 7 to 9 at Mawlai Mawroh in Shillong.

The tournament was organised by the Meghalaya Boxing Association in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.

The winners from Garo Hills include:

Marbaniang M. Sangma – Bronze medal in 31-33 kg (Sub-Junior)
Nambearo M. Sangma – Gold medal in 33-35 kg (Sub-Junior)
Challang D. Arengh – Gold medal in 52-55 kg (Sub-Junior)
Chegado Kuringsal D. Momin – Gold medal in 50-52 kg (Junior)
Dimsrang Ch. Sangma – Bronze medal in 52-54 kg (Junior)
Casbe K. Marak – Gold medal in 60-63 kg (Junior)

Balnas A. Sangma, a National Boxer and Secretary of the West Garo Hills Boxing Association, acknowledged that despite the limited infrastructure and training facilities in Garo Hills, the boxers have shown significant improvement and expressed confidence that with proper training and support, these athletes will shine on even bigger stages and tournaments.

Sangma informed that this was the first tournament in which boxers from the West Garo Hills Boxing Association participated in an event outside of Tura.

He mentioned that, despite it being their first time, West Garo Hills District was able to send eight participants to the competition—three in the sub-junior category and five in the junior category. Out of these, six won medals – including four golds.

Boxing may not be as popular as other sports, but Sangma said it is one of the fastest-growing in terms of interest as he encouraged more youths to come forward and get involved in the sport.

He pointed out that Garo Hills currently has only three coaches—two under the Khelo India Coach and one Diploma Coach—and the boxers have their regular practice sessions at the MP Stadium in Dakopgre, Tura.

He further added that the four gold medalists will now undergo further training as they prepare to represent Meghalaya at the national level.
