Garo Hills Chess Association hosts 47th Meghalaya State Chess Championship

Tura, June 12: The 47th Meghalaya State FIDE-rated Chess Championship 2024 has kicked off in Tura on Wednesday at the Asanang Wangala Hall, organised by the Garo Hills Chess Association (GHCA) under the aegis of Meghalaya Chess Association (MCA). The Hub News official media partners for the championship.

The members of the GHCA and MCA were present at the opening ceremony, where Jessey James R Marak, President of GHCA motivated the participants for fair play in his address.

This championship carries significant weight, as the top four contenders will earn the honour of representing Meghalaya in the upcoming national championship.

The four-day open category chess tournament, from 12th to 15th June, will witness active participation of 84 chess fanatics of all ages from around the state vying for top honours and the opportunity to represent the state on the national stage.

The tournament is played under the FIDE Laws of Chess and eight rounds of Swiss System, and the rate of play being 60 minutes with 30 seconds increment from move one. The All-India Chess Federation (AICF) registration for the year 2024-2025 is mandatory for all the participants playing in this tournament.

The GHCA has brought in T. J. Biju Singh as Chief Arbiter; Arun Singh as Deputy Chief Arbiter and Gulap Gogoi as the Technical Arbiter for the tournament.

The GHCA hopes to provide a platform for the chess enthusiasts of Garo Hills to better develop their game and also in turn bring out some promising talents from the region.

A total of 21 cash prizes has been allotted for the winners of the tournament under various categories, with ₹10,000 being the highest cash prize for the champion, ₹7000 as the second prize, ₹6000 for the third position and ₹5000, ₹4000, ₹2500, ₹1500, and ₹1000 for the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th positions respectively in the open/main category.
