Tura, March 29: Christians across Garo Hills observed Maundy Thursday to commemorate the Last Supper Lord Jesus Christ had with his 12 disciples on the night he would be betrayed by one of them and crucifixed on the cross on Good Friday by the Romans.
According to the New Testament in the holy Bible, it was during this solemn occasion in Jerusalem that Jesus established the sacrament of the Holy Communion and humbly washed the feet of his disciples, imparting a poignant lesson in humility and service.
Today, Maundy Thursday is observed by Christians worldwide as a time for spiritual reflection and remembrance.
For Catholics, Maundy Thursday marks the institution of two of the Church’s most revered sacraments: the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
In Tura and other parts of Garo Hills, priests in the catholic church washed the feet of 12 men to signify the love Christ had for mankind.
“Maundy Thursday is a very significant holy event because on this day Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood and set the example of service by washing the feet of his disciples and reminded us all to do this in memory of him,” said Auxiliary Bishop of Tura Rev Fr C J Jose.
Bishop jose led the faithful in special service at St John’s church in remote Siju region of South Garo Hills where he, along with other priests in different parts of Garo Hills, washed the feet of 12 laymen to honour Jesus Christ.
This was followed by Holy communion or the Lord’s Supper after which devotees led a night long adoration in the churches to commemorate the suffering Christ endured at the garden of Getsemane where he was taken captive by the romans and tortured through the night before his crucifixion on the cross.
