Tura, Sept 30: 19 years back on this day, 9 innocent souls from Garo Hills were lost to the bullets of police during the protests against the bifurcation of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE). Known as the ‘Black Friday’, this day marks one of the darkest chapters in the history of the state and Garo Hills, where four teenage students were killed by the police in Tura and five in Williamnagar during a protest over MBOSE in Tura and Williamnagar.
In its commemoration, the 19th Memorial Service of 30th September 2005 martyrs was held at the District Auditorium in Tura on Monday.
The event saw prayer services, distribution of prizes to the winners of the slogan writing competition, speeches by individuals reminiscing their experiences of that day and paid homage to the martyrs by felicitating their families with a token of affection.
Organized by the 30th September Victims’ Solidarity Forum and student organisations, particularly the Garo Students’ Union and the Tura Government College Students’ Union, the solemn event was attended by locals and family members of the martyrs who paid their respects to the brave souls that the day enshrines.
The ceremony culminated with the lighting of candles and floral tribute, first by the martyrs’ families and then by other attendees, at the cenotaph in Tura’s Chandmari playground, symbolizing remembrance and hope.
The annual event stands as a testament to honouring the memory and legacies of those who sacrificed their lives on the 30th of September 2005, ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten and they continue to inspire generations to come.
