Tura, Sept 9: Three core members cum office bearers of Tura Runners’ Club, Freddie Ochi N Sangma, Chimpu M Sangma, and Tarzan Ch Sangma successfully completed the formidable Ladakh Marathon 2024, an event that is increasingly gaining prominence in the global marathon calender.

The marathon was held at Leh on September 8, 2024.

Ladakh Marathon is the world’s highest marathon, at an altitude of 11,500, and a distance of 42.195 kms. The event is certified by AIMS-IAAF (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races).

The trio from Tura achieved a feat that challenged extreme high altitude, mental fortitude and fitness, after months of dedicated training. They have also been consistently participating in marathons across the country for several years now. The support team consisted of Salseng M Sangma and Senora G Momin, also members of TRC.

Garo Hills region has been put in the marathoners map by Tura Runners’ Club since 2015 through its highly successful annual event, Turathon Hill Challenge, a full and half marathon event.

It has produced elite runners, notably Batsrang A Sangma, who completed with podium finishes in Delhi and Kolkata and Gauhati Half Marathons.

Known for its picturesque route amidst the greens of the Jengjal-Williamnagar highway, Turathon Hill Challenge in the past has seen international participants from Nepal, Kenya and Ethiopia, besides running enthusiasts from Delhi, Kolkata, Assam and parts of NE.

The event this year is slated for the coming winter months, in a bid to promote the tourism and festival season in the region.
