Williamnagar, June 23: Students from Garo Hills are raising the bar on the importance of debates and discussions, taking on challenging global issues, as was evident during this year’s second edition of the Garo Hills Model United Nations Conference that took place from 20th to 22nd June, at Loyola College, Williamnagar, under the theme Advocacy, Posterity and Reconciliation.
This annual event is organised by the Meghalaya Model United Nations (MMUN), which is a conglomerate of the United Nations that encourages the youth to take on global crisis, International issues, diplomacy of the United Nations.
Being hosted for the second time in Garo Hills, last year the event was at Tura Don Bosco College, as many as a hundred delegates from different districts of Garo Hills actively took part in the three day conference. Hub News was the official media partner of the event.
The student delegates were segregated into five committees, namely the United Nation Environment Assembly (UNEA), United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW), General Assembly-Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), the Mock Legislative Assembly (MLA) and the International Press Corps (IPC).
Various global issues facing the world was discussed and ideas put forward to resolve the problems.
Opening the conference, East Garo Hills SP, Stephen A. Rynjah, spoke on the importance of co- curriculum in moulding students overall growth.
The conference provides a platform for the youth to acquire important skills such as public speaking skills, research, diplomacy, critical thinking and writing skills.
Delegates in the conference act as representatives of countries and simulates the United Nations in committees allotted to them in the United Nations.
The participants simulate dialogue on global issues while representing different countries, including simulations of the state legislative assembly.
The grand finale on Saturday was charged with student delegates on their feet raising critical points as they challenged one another on the debate floor.
Officer on Special Duty and Press Secretary to the chief minister, Saidul Khan, graced the closing ceremony of the conference on Saturday evening taking part in a lively interaction with students shedding light on the environmental impact of sand mining in the Garo Hills region where the Ganol river is facing an existential threat.
He also gave an in-depth insight into the concept of the Uniform Civil Code that aims to replace personal laws based on religion or community with a common set of laws applicable to all citizens.
Winners of each committee that took part in this conference are being provided an opportunity to be a part of the main Shillong conference, that will be held at NEHU headquarters, Shillong, from the 23rd to 25th of August, this year.
With the resounding success of the GHMUN 2.0, organizers look forward to having a blast in the upcoming main Shillong Chapter, continuing their efforts to empower and inspire the next generation of youth leaders.
