Shillong, July 6: The death of a youth from Garo Hills has rocked the region with the family members of the deceased alleging that he was “beaten, stabbed and tortured” to death and didn’t die by suicide as claimed by authorities of a rehabilitation centre.
The deceased has been identified as one Niksamseng Ch Marak.
According to the sister of the deceased, Jagamchi Ch Marak, his brother along with two other acquaintances were caught by the police on July 2 for “no valid reasons.” They were handed over to Krishnai police station, Goalpara, Assam.
Since the deceased was under psychiatric treatment for one year, he was handed to New Life Foundation Centre Nayapara, Goalpara. But two days later the family was informed by the rehab centre authorities that Marak had committed suicide.
The family members claimed that the authorities of the rehabilitation centre first said, Marak was found dead in the bathroom and committed suicide by hanging, but later changed their statement.
“They changed their statement that he died after striking his head on the wall multiple times, however when we examined the body on July 5, we found no injuries to the head,” the brother of the deceased said in a social media post.
There were “severe injury marks on the chin, hips, legs and deep knife cut injury on the left side of his face along with burns. This indicates he was beaten, stabbed and tortured to death inside the rehab centre,” the brother alleged.
It has been claimed that the manager and the owner of the rehab centre don’t have proper documents, like the Rehabilitation Council of India license to run it, nor do they have any psychiatric or psychological degree holders to handle such inmates.
“The centre should be investigated and closed to protect the lives of others,” the brother of the deceased said, adding an FIR has been lodged and investigation is on.
