Shillong, April 7: Geoscientists, policymakers, and researchers from throughout the country are converging in Shillong for a two-day National Conference on Advances in Geosciences: New Insights and Sustainable Solutions for Safe Living in Mountainous Regions, organized by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) on April 8-9 at the State Convention Centre.

The event, marking 175 years of GSI’s contributions to geoscience, will provide a platform for discussions on mountain geoscience, disaster management, and sustainable development. The conference will culminate in a field visit on April 10 to Meghalaya’s geoheritage sites, including Mawmluh Cave and Arwah-Lumshynna Cave, which are renowned for their fossil-rich formations and geological significance.

Experts say the geosciences are becoming increasingly relevant in addressing global challenges such as climate change, resource management, natural hazards, and sustainable development. Geosciences’ forward-looking aspect focuses on emerging trends, innovative technologies, and sustainable practices that will shape the future of our planet.

The organizers say in a larger perspective, the conference will invoke participants to explore new insights, discuss cutting-edge research, propose strategies for addressing global challenges through geosciences and provide a comprehensive exploration of the role of geosciences in the 21st century and beyond, addressing both current trends and future opportunities for sustainable solutions.

The mountainous landmass of the country, particularly the Himalayas in the north and northeast India, is known for its serene and picturesque landscape, preservation of fossils, testimony of geological complexities, and sites of geological importance (geo-heritage). On the contrary, it also embraces several geological hazards that had shaped the landscape in the past and make the society vulnerable in the present. The organizers say the role of geoscientists is exceptional and is key to promoting understanding of these complexities and opportunities and achieving the sustainable development of mankind.

The conference will discuss on Geo-hazards, Medical Geology, Engineering Geology, Emerging Technologies and Innovation in Disaster Management, including Early Warning System, Geology of NE, Application of Remote Sensing in Geoscience studies, Paleogeography and Geodynamics of mountainous region, Geo-heritage, Geological education and new approach in geological education.

GSI, established in 1851, is among the world’s leading geoscience organizations. With its Shillong-based North Eastern Region headquarters, the organization has been instrumental in geological research, resource mapping, and disaster risk assessment.

GSI has identified 32 sites as National Geological Monuments that provide opportunities to understand the geological processes that operated during the geological past. In the Northeast region, there are two geoheritage and nine geotourism sites of national and International importance.
