Guwahati, July 20: Two young girls in Assam’s Jorhat district stepped into the shoes of top district officials on Saturday—serving as District Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner for a day.
Both of them got the opportunity in initiative under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme.
The opportunity came as a reward for winning an essay competition titled “One Day as District Commissioner”, open to girls aged 14 to 25. The unique contest aimed to encourage young women to explore public administration and leadership roles.
Postgraduate student Geetashree Sharma took on the role of District Commissioner (DC), while Sanshita Baruah, a Class 9 student, served as Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC). Both got a rare, behind-the-scenes look at governance and administration—an experience they described as unforgettable.
“We attended a video conference with the Chief Secretary and got an overview of the DC’s responsibilities,” Geetashree shared. “I never imagined I’d sit in the DC’s chair. Seeing how decisions are made and policies implemented has motivated me to aim for a career in the civil services.”
Sanshita echoed the excitement, calling the experience a “great learning opportunity.”
She added, “We saw how different departments work, how the district tracks development, and even learned about election processes. It was truly eye-opening.”
Tonmay Acharya, District Programme Coordinator of the Sakalpa Mahila Sabilikaran Kendra, which helped organize the initiative, said the idea was to spark interest among girls in governance and civil services.
“This programme was designed to generate awareness about competitive exams and careers in public administration. The enthusiastic response to the essay competition showed that young girls are eager to engage in leadership roles,” he said.
