Shillong, Mar 12: The camps of the disbanded Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) have been converted to tourist spots in South Garo Hills District.

This was informed by cabinet minister and Siju-Rongara legislator Rakkam A Sangma on Monday, while lauding the performance of the six-year-old MDA government.

He said that earlier militancy in Garo Hills was a concern but after the MDA government came to power, it has left no stone unturned and ensured transformation in the entire environment of the Garo Hills. “Garo Hills now is like heaven. It is very peaceful,” Sangma added.

The minister also informed that now thousands of tourists from the state and outside the state and even from outside the country are visiting tourist spots in his constituency.

“(Tourists are also visiting a) particular place, which used to be the GNLA’s camp and this has been converted into a tourist spot. This has been a blessing to many as they are getting livelihoods from the tourists coming in,” he said. He also said that very few people now are coming to meet him and asking for money as they are getting a livelihood by providing hospitality to the tourists.
