Government pushes to complete Nongmensong housing projects for BPL families

Shillong, Nov 24: The Meghalaya government is ramping up efforts to finalize the long-pending housing projects at Nongmensong Lumphira, aimed at benefiting Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

The Urban Affairs Department is currently drafting a new Detailed Project Report (DPR) to address the remaining construction work and plan additional buildings.

“We are in the process of preparing the DPR for the balance work,” said Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar adding its too early to provide specific figures, our focus is on completing the plans and moving ahead.

The Minister assured that the housing units will be handed over to the intended beneficiaries upon project completion. “These homes are meant for the underprivileged, and we are committed to ensuring they are delivered as intended,” Dhar stated.

The unfinished buildings have raised community concerns about their misuse for illegal activities, including drug trafficking and theft. Addressing these issues, Dhar emphasized, “I am deeply concerned about this. I’ve instructed officials to expedite the DPR and ensure swift progress on both the incomplete and new constructions. We aim to complete the work within a month.”

The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has urged the government to either expedite the completion of the projects or take measures to secure the area. They highlighted the growing risks posed by the abandoned structures to local safety and well-being.

Minister Dhar reiterated the government’s dual commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the housing projects and addressing security concerns. “This work is for the community, and we are determined to create a safer, better environment for the residents,” he affirmed.
