GSU leader emerges as prime accused in Chenik Resort assault in Garo Hills

Must read

Tura, July 31: The recent assault of a Tura Bazar resident in a resort in West Garo Hills, which has sent shockwaves through the Garo Hills region, seems to have the involvement of the leader of a prominent pressure group of Garo Hills.

Police investigation has made a Garo Students’ Union (GSU) leader as the prime accused for the assault case at the Chenik resort in Rongram.

The shocking incident occurred on Sunday (July 28) evening when the victim, Karan Damai, a 34-year-old resident of Tura Bazar, had gone to the resort in West Garo Hills district with three other friends where he was brutally attacked.

The victim was dancing with his friends when the accused joined them on the dance floor and suddenly punched Damai in the eye. Not done, the accused attacked him as the victim lay injured on the floor bloodied. He sustained serious injuries and required 32 stitches near his eye.

Police sources said the accused has been identified as GSU’s Ampati president, Megadeth Marak, who initially tried to mislead police by filing a police FIR in Rongram police station claiming to be the victim.

Later, when police visited the resort to obtain evidence, the owner and former MLA Ismail Marak displayed CCTV footage that shows Megadeth to be the attacker and Damai as the victim who was attacked without any provocation.

An FIR has been filed by Damai, and the police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the assault.

Mentionably, the incident assumes significance as it comes in light of the recent assaults of many non-tribal migrants in the Khasi – Jaintia Hills part of the State by pressure groups in the name of lacking proper papers to work or stay in the State. Atleast 2500 migrant labourers have been sent back in less than a month from the Khasi – Jaintia Hills for lacking proper documents by the pressure groups, with most cases involving some form of physical assault and aggressive behaviour in the name of conducting anti-influx drives.

GSU was one of the 8 anti-influx pressure groups who recently met in Shillong and decided to conduct massive checking against illegal and undocumented migrants across Khasi, Jaintia and Garo regions of the state. The meeting was held on July 24, 2024 at the FKJGP’s state office at Mawlai in Shillong, which was also attended by Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Achik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO), and Federation for Achik Freedom (FAF).
