Williamnagar, Oct 19: The highly anticipated Eastern Zone Garo Student Union (GSU) election, originally scheduled for October 26, 2023, encountered a major setback on Thursday during the scrutiny process at the GSU’s Eastern Zone office in Williamnagar.
The scrutiny committee, responsible for assessing the eligibility of candidates, conducted a detailed review of the nomination papers of eight candidates running for the position of President and six candidates vying for the role of General Secretary.
To the committee’s dismay, it became evident during this thorough scrutiny that all the paperwork submitted by candidates, both for the President and General Secretary positions, contained technical deficiencies. This discovery led to intense discussions and debates among committee members.
Following the deliberations, it was unanimously agreed that the scrutiny committee would retain the authority to make the final decision on this matter. Consequently, the committee has opted to defer its decision until further discussions take place and is committed to notifying the affected candidates of their ruling in due course.
In an exclusive interview with Hub News, Chief Election Commissioner, Semion D. Sangma, said, “The rescheduling or confirmation of the election date on the originally proposed date is contingent on the outcome of our ongoing discussions and the final decision to be made by the scrutiny committee.”
The Eastern Zone GSU election, which was eagerly awaited, now stands at a critical juncture, awaiting a resolution to the technical issues that have come to light during the scrutiny process. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
