Guwahati, Jan 30: Guwahati Municipal Corporation on Tuesday took out a massive eviction drive and cleared encroachment land at Forest Gate in Guwahati.
The land that was cleared was owned by Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).
The eviction drive was conducted by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation at Noonmati’s Forest Gate, resulting in the removal of these unlawful establishments.
After the eviction drive, tension prevailed in the area.
The people who were evicted claimed that they received no prior notice, leaving them unsupported.
“We have not received any notice for the eviction drive from the administration. We have been living here for many years, but suddenly, we were evicted. Where will we go now? Its a gross injustice done by the administration because they should have served us notice before the eviction drive,” said an agitated public whose house was razed by bulldozers.
On January 10, about 50 families in the Pancharatna Reserve Forest area were rendered homeless after an eviction drive against illegal encroachers. Reports suggest these families unlawfully occupied the forest land and built homes and other illegal structures.
