Shillong, Nov 3: In a determined show of unity and resolve, the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) organized a peaceful demonstration in New Delhi on Friday.
The protest aimed to draw attention to a series of longstanding demands, including the urgent implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, the recognition of the Khasi Language in the Eighth Schedule, and the expeditious resolution of the border issue between Meghalaya and Assam.
Addressing the gathered crowd, HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the Union Home Ministry’s perceived indifference towards the demands of the people of Meghalaya. He emphasized that the State Government had previously adopted a Resolution in favour of implementing the ILP in Meghalaya and urged swift action on this front.
Kharbani also stressed the inclusion of Khasi Language in the shortlist of 38 languages under consideration, asserting that its recognition would be a significant boon for the people of Meghalaya.
Turning to the sensitive border issue between Assam and Meghalaya, Kharbani acknowledged the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the respective Chief Ministers, signalling positive steps towards resolution. However, he highlighted instances of communal conflicts persisting in border areas, underscoring the need for the Union Government to take this matter with the utmost seriousness.
The protest was also joined by National People’s Party (NPP) MDCs – Bajop Pyngrope of Rambrai Jyrngam and Sherborlamg Mawlong of Sohiong.
