Shillong, May 10: The retrofitting work of the all-important Umiam Dam has set a major challenge for the travellers, who are caught unaware in the traffic snarls wasting hours in the jams. The travellers can use an alternate route to avoid the jams, the route is longer, but the travellers are bound to enjoy the scenic beauty along the road. The Mawsiatkhnam bypass road is the perfect route to avoid the traffic.
To take the alternate route, the travellers from Nongpoh towards Shillong need to slightly change the route. Instead of taking the usual right turn below the flyover at Umiam, they should continue straight towards Shillong airport road. After passing the airport junction, about 3 kilometers later, a junction named Lumksehlama comes and sets travellers on the path less travelled.
Taking a right turn leads them towards Mawsiatkhnam. From there, another right turn towards Umjarain-Mawkynroh Junction near NEHU sets them on the final leg of their journey, the road is devoid of traffic and brings them closer to their destination Shillong.
For those journeying towards Guwahati, a similar bypass route starting from Shillong, then swerve towards Mawtawar near NEHU, Nongkohlew, Umrynjah, Mawsiatknam, and finally the Shillong Bypass, offers a smooth ride towards Guwahati.
For those tired of being stuck in endless queues of vehicles due to repair works at Umiam Dam and to avoid the traffic snarls at Mawlai and other congested spots, the alternate route provides the much-needed respite. The route not only saves from traffic but also provides an opportunity to admire the untapped beauty of Meghalaya.
So, the next time you plan a trip to Shillong or Guwahati, consider taking the road less travelled, and who knows, you might just stumble upon your new favourite scenic route.
Capture the memories, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and make your journey as memorable as the destination itself.
