Gangtok, Sept 28: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has triggered multiple landslides across various parts of Sikkim, disrupting daily life and road connectivity. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days.
According to official reports, Sikkim recorded 102 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with the districts of Mangan, Soteng, and Gyalshing receiving particularly heavy downpours. The incessant rains have caused significant damage to infrastructure and further weakened roadways.
Sikkim’s lone Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, expressed concerns regarding the deteriorating road connectivity between Sikkim and West Bengal, particularly along National Highway 10, a crucial link for the state’s transportation network. The highway, which has been prone to frequent landslides, has once again been severely impacted by the ongoing weather conditions.
While local authorities are monitoring the situation closely, they have advised the residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel as landslide-prone areas remain unstable. Emergency response teams are on alert, prepared to handle any further incidents as the state braces for continued adverse weather.
