Heavy rains, storm in Northeast : Guwahati airport damaged, flights diverted

Guwahati, Mar 31: Heavy rains and storm has affected the North Eastern region on Sunday. The heavy downpour and rain led to flood in Guwahati airport, and six flights were diverted. The roof of Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) terminal has been flooded and several machines have failed

Several area of Guwahati city – Jalukbari, Dharapur, Azara, VIP and other parts of the city were hit by thunderstorms and heavy rains. The storm uprooted a big tree at the Oil India complex outside the airport, blocking the approach to the airport.

On Sunday, six flights operated by IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata.

IMD says heavy rains till April 4

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted  that thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall are likely to lash Assam along with other northeastern states till April 4.

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, said, “A cyclonic circulation lies over North East Assam at 1.5 km above mean sea level. Under the influence of the above synoptic conditions and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal to the northeastern region due to S-ly/SW-ly winds in the lower lever, light to moderate rainfall at many to most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall along with light to moderate thunderstorms and lightning and gusty wind with speeds of 30–40 kmph is likely to occur during 31 March – 04 April 2024.”

3 injured in Assam’s Boko

In Boko’s  Lampi area along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Three people were seriously injured when their house collapsed in heavy rains.  The injured were identified as Bhima Roy of Lampi and Radhika Chunar of Makaibari village. Another man was injured when a tree fell on his house in Harshanagar-Mainadara on the Assam-Meghalaya border in Lampi. The storm lasted for about three hours and caused heavy damage in various parts of Boko.

4 dead, several injured in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri

 Storm lashed havoc in parts of Jalpaiguri on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of four persons and leaving at least 70 people injured. Strong winds caused extensive damage, including the destruction of several houses, uprooting of trees, and the toppling of electric poles in the district headquarters town and surrounding areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the death and has asked administration to oversee the situation.
