Shillong, Oct 17: Cabinet Minister and Pynthorumkhrah legislator, A.L. Hek, on Thursday met with the Chief Engineer of PWD Roads and other officials to highlight the poor condition of roads in his constituency and the need for urgent repair works.

“I called the Chief Engineer of PWD Roads and two engineers from the Shillong Central Division and PWD Bypass Division, which fall under my constituency, because many of the roads in my area, like Langkyrding Mihngi, Mawpat, Lumshiap, and others, are in a dilapidated condition due to the heavy showers. I have told them that these roads need immediate attention, and I want all resurfacing and reconstruction to be completed before the Christmas season,” Hek stated.

He further discussed the road leading to BDW International School, highlighting its importance for an upcoming service at the Presbyterian Church in Nongmynsong. “The Presbyterian Church is organizing a big service, so I have asked the engineers to ensure the road is completed before the event,” Hek added.

When questioned about the collapsed bridge near BDW International School, Hek reiterated, “We cannot just say it has collapsed. Anything under construction is ongoing. Until it is finished, we will not be able to give any assessment.”

Addressing the delay in the bridge’s completion, he said, “I’m not blaming anyone. It’s because of the rainy season. In Meghalaya, it is very difficult to work during the rainy season. Whatever work starts often gets washed away, and we don’t want that to happen.”

Recently, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) suspended traffic over the newly constructed bridge near the BDW International School in Nongmynsong, which is under his constituency, due to significant cracks that made it unsafe for vehicular movement. To ensure commuter safety, the road has been temporarily closed.
