Must read

Guwahati, Jan 25: With Republic Day approaching, security measures in upper Assam have been tightened catering to concerns about a potential terror attack by Ulfa-I cadres, who have announced a boycott of the observances.

Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Shwetank Mishra reassured the public, stating, “We are fully prepared to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations, allowing citizens to partake without fear. Over the past month, intensive patrolling has been underway in all crucial locations and vulnerable areas. Night patrolling has also been intensified. In addition to regular naka checking, extensive patrolling is being conducted on highways, roads, bridges, and embankments.”

According to Mishra, security personnel have been tasked with guarding the district’s vital facilities, which is closely monitored and includes public spaces, marketplaces, oil and gas pipelines, powerhouses, transmission towers, large bridges, railroad stations, and airport.

Security checkpoints have been built across the town and its surroundings in reaction to the alleged threat, especially at entry and exit points.

In order to prevent any unfortunate events, authorities are taking all necessary precautions, for people to enjoy the celebrations feeling secured.

The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is an armed militants group that operates in Assam with an attempt to build an independent sovereign nation state of Assam for the indigenous Assamese people.

The Government of India banned the organisation in 1990 citing it as a terrorist organisation, while the United States Department of State lists it under “other groups of concern.”
