Tura, May 21: Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of South Garo Hills S. Awasthi, chaired a l high-level meeting on Tuesday to assess the preparedness for the upcoming Southwest Monsoon 2024. The meeting, held at the District Resource Centre in Baghmara, focused on implementing measures to minimize and prevent potential disasters in the district.
In his address, Deputy Commissioner Awasthi emphasized the importance of vigilance and readiness among district authorities to respond effectively to any disaster or calamity that may arise during the monsoon season. He urged the district machinery to stay alert and proactive.
Awasthi also called on Block Development Officers (BDOs) and departments including Water Resources, Irrigation, Public Health Engineering (PHE), and Soil and Water Conservation to devise and implement constructive methods for water conservation. He highlighted the necessity of rainwater harvesting and efficient water management practices in rural areas to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
During the meeting, the District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) of Baghmara presented an overview of the district’s previous disaster response efforts. He highlighted the various rescue operations and relief assistance provided by the department during major disasters, particularly citing the devastating landslides in 2022 that resulted in significant loss of lives and property.
The DDMO also informed about the revised compensation rates under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) for the period 2022-23 to 2025-26. The revised rates include Rs 1,20,000 per house in plain areas for pucca (permanent) houses and Rs 1,30,000 for kutcha (temporary) houses in hilly areas, providing critical financial assistance to those who lose their homes to disasters.
The meeting concluded with a call to action for all departments to collaborate and ensure that robust preparedness measures are in place to safeguard the residents of South Garo Hills during the upcoming monsoon season.
