Shillong, Nov 10 : The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) in Ri Bhoi District has officially lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District, demanding legal measures be taken against those responsible for alleged extortion of funds from vehicles transporting chickens bound for export to Meghalaya.
Accompanied by fellow members, the organization’s working president, Banpynshai Umbah, had originally scheduled a meeting with the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner to hand-deliver the complaint letter. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the letter was submitted without the planned face-to-face encounter.
HITO, Ri Bhoi District, initiated the complaint in response to troubling reports of illicit monetary demands made on chicken suppliers operating in Byrnihat.
In addressing this issue, Banpynshai Umbah, the Ri Bhoi HITO Working President, stressed that the organisation is urging the district administration to swiftly address the matter. This extortion has had significant consequences, with one vehicle reportedly being charged Rs. 30,000, contributing to a notable increase in chicken prices within the local market.
Banpynshai Umbah had further emphasised that HITO will grant authorities a one-week window to address this unlawful collection. If no action is taken within this period, the organisation is prepared to pursue alternative courses of action to rectify the situation.
