HNLC slams police for targeting NGO leaders for alleged links with outfit

Must read

Shillong, July 28: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Friday slammed the police department for allegedly summoning NGO leaders for questioning on the matters relating to the outfit.

In a statement, HNLC general secretary cum publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said, “When Champion Sangma, a former DSP, and some police personnel deserted the police department to join the GNLA, we observed that neither the government nor the police department summoned other police officers. Is it wise for the police department to summon the president of a particular organization when some members of certain pressure groups join the HNLC of their own free will?”

He also claimed, “Yes, there may be members in pressure groups, who have connections with us, but it does not imply that the entire organization, its president, or general secretary is involved. We, as an organization, will not lie if someone is an active member, whether they belong to a pressure group or are acting individually.”

“For example, Tarsan Lymba is not involved in IEDs blast, yet the government arrested him without any proof. When the police make arbitrary arrests without evidence, it can have a psychological and long-term impact on that individual,” he stated.

Further, the HNLC leader said that there are cases where the police arrest a suspected HNLC member, leading to devastating consequences such as the death of his wife from a heart attack and the individual suffering from mental instability.

“What happens when the police arrest and falsely accuse the breadwinner of a family? While the HNLC could retaliate in kind by kidnapping or killing suspected police informers randomly, we, as an organization, refrain from such actions without concrete evidence.”

Nongtraw said instead of addressing the issue of drugs, both the police and government seem to be wasting their resources by framing and arresting youths. The increasing drug presence in our community seems to be part of a nefarious government scheme.

“Drugs are detrimental to both individuals and society, as they lead to the destruction of our community. It appears that the government prefers to throw money at problems rather than solve them, our community is left jumping from one fire to another,” he said.
