Must read

Shillong, July 27: Tourists coming in with high expectations of a memorable trip to Meghalaya and had to turn back midway due to a blockade perpetrated by a local group opposing Assam vehicles had turned to authorities expected a strong hand from the government against lawlessness.

Instead they found a home minister treating the lawbreakers with kid gloves.

Reacting to the blockade incident, Home Minister Prestone Tynsong termed it as “unfortunate”and criticized the “behavior” of the young “boys” involved, warning the pressure group against exceeding lawful limits.

Doubling down, he urged the group to engage in dialogue with the government instead.

“The law will take its own course, and no one should take it into their own hands,” Tynsong stated. “However, the government’s doors are always open for talks. If anyone has grievances, they should sit down with the government, and we will find a solution together.”

Tynsong claimed that it was not only the aspiration of the state government but also every citizen to get the Inner Line Permit (ILP).

He announced that around 10 people have been arrested in connection with the incident at Umtyngar. But no long term safeguards were mentioned by the home minister.

Addressing the decision of various pressure groups to push for the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) due to dissatisfaction with the government’s actions, Tynsong emphasized the state government’s persistent efforts. He mentioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s recent meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the issue.

“Time and again, the state government impresses upon the central government the importance of this issue,” he added.

Regarding labour certificates, Tynsong stated that the government has instructed the Labor Department to intensify their efforts and ensure compliance. He warned that contractors who fail to apply for the required documents for bringing in migrant labourers would be blacklisted. He also urged migrant labourers entering the state to respect local laws.
