Shillong, Oct 27: The Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC) on Friday met the Education Minister to apprise him of the educational-related issues in West Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi District.

The Union was led by HYC president Roy Synrem along with former president accompanied with the HYC units.

Synrem said that in West Khasi Hills, there are around 90 government L.P. schools in the district, with a student strength of about 50 to 100 or more in each School. In every such school, the government has appointed either 1 or 2 teachers to teach the students, and these teachers have to take classes for students from nursery up to class V. “We have demanded that immediate recruitment be done, and the minister has assured that from next month it will begin,” said Synrem.

The non-availability of teachers as per student-teacher ratio have immensely affected the education sector in the whole District and is a grave injustice cause to the students enrolled in these schools, mentioned HYC.

They have also demanded that the existing government school buildings, which are in dilapidated condition, need urgent interventions for repair and other works. “If left unattended, the majority of these schools will not be able to cater to the students in the coming session. Hence, we urged you to take immediate and urgent steps in this regard,” said Synrem.

Infrastructure and furniture was also part of their demands for majority of the Schools in the District have not been provided as per the requirements.

The HYC president said that they have done an inspection and found that in all 30 schools they’ve visited, especially LP schools, students have to sit in a very uncomfortable position as they have to pack themselves into each bench due to the non-availability of proper furniture.

The HYC has also urged for the necessary basic amenities to be provided in the newly inaugurated Higher Secondary Sections of Sib Sing Memorial Government School. The school was inaugurated early this year but has no power supply, water, or other amenities.

Meanwhile, education minister Rakkam Sangma informed that the education department will soon be filling the vacancies as qualified MTET candidates. An interview will be held on November 15.

“Interview for qualified MTET candidates will be held next month 15 November to fill up more than 1,200 vacancies in the Government LP schools and more than 400 in UP schools

We will try to complete the whole recruitment process by the end of 2023,” said Sangma.
