Shillong, Nov 9: The Meghalaya Cabinet on November 5 approved the proposal for the up-gradation of the Mairang Civil Sub-Division to a new district. The new district was christened as the ‘Eastern West Khasi Hills’. But the name has sparked humorous comments all over the internet since its announcement.

The Hynñiewtrep Youth’s Council (HYC), Northwest circle, in a press conference on Tuesday lauded the state Government, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh and other MLAs from Mairang and Nongstoiñ for taking up the initiative in upgrading the Mairang Sub-Division into a district.

But it termed the newly given name for the district as ‘funny’ and expressed that it’s hard to accept the fact that the government has come up with such a humorous name.

“The name Eastern West Khasi Hills doesn’t make sense, in which direction of the compass does it point?” questioned Ebeljune Nongrang, president HYC Nongkhlaw Circle.

“We will not oppose but urge the government to change the name into a sensible one” added Nongrang.

Nongrang further stated that the HYC has sent a suggestion to the local MLAs in naming the new district.
