Shillong, May 24: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Wednesday demanded the state government to terminate the re-appointment of Puranjan Das as the Chief General Manager of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).

In a letter to the MTDC managing director, HYC general secretary Roykupar Synrem said, “We demand from your good office to kindly take steps to terminate the Contract of Puranjan Das, Chief General Manager, MTDC, forthwith and failing which we will be forced to organise a Protest against the Corporation as this involves deprivation of job opportunities to our local educated and deserving youths.”

Synrem said Puranjan Das on attaining the age of superannuation on 31.03.2023, is supposed to retire from service on the said date.

“However, it is learnt that the Corporation on 31.03.2023 re-appointed him as the Chief General Manager on contract basis with effect from 01.04.2023 to 30.09.2023 on a monthly pay of Rs. 1,57,968 with an option that his contract may be renewed again after the said period of Six months by the Corporation,” he said.

Synrem said the HYC strongly objects to this act of re-appointment of the retired person by the MTDC and more so paying him the same amount of salary as paid during his service.

“Secondly, this practice of appointment of retired employees will create of situation of non-availability of employment opportunities for other deserving candidates and youths of our State,” he said while adding that the organization is putting its strongest objection to this practice as this will deprive the deserving local educated youth with an opportunity to get employment in such a Government Undertaking entity in the State.
