Hailakandi, May 6: Hailakandi Police in Assam apprehended an illegal money lender, Tapan Nath (48), from Sarbanandapur village last night. The arrest was made following a written complaint received by the police.
During the search of Nath’s house, the police recovered and seized cash amounting to Rs. 51.29 lakh, three ATM cards, six cheque slips, two bank passbooks (SBI and UBI), two non-judicial agreement papers, and an Income Tax return file.
The operation was led by the ASP, Crime, Hailakandi, along with the Officer-in-Charge of Lala Police Station and the In-Charge of Abdullahpur Police Post. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
It is to be mentioned that Assam CM recently announced a statewide crackdown against illegal money lenders. “Action against illegal money lenders will continue in the future until such people stop exploiting common people in need of money for emergency situations,” said a police official.
Illegal money lending has become a growing concern as these lenders often charge exorbitant interest rates, violating RBI norms. Such high-interest loans have driven many borrowers to commit suicide after failing to repay the money, highlighting the need for strict action against illegal money lenders.
