Tura, Nov 10: As winter arrives, bringing with it a chilling breeze, the Wangala festivities contribute to the grandeur of the celebration in Garo Hills region of Meghalaya.

The festivities of the Wangala Dance festival continued on its second day with the vibrant Rugala ceremony. Local as well as foreign visitors especially from France were captivated by the enchanting 100 Drums Wangala Festival held at Baljek, around 38 km from Tura.

A day ahead of the Wangala festival, a ceremonial practice known as Rugala was conducted by the Nokma. In this ritual, offerings of special rice beer, along with cooked rice and vegetables, are presented to Misi Saljong, the Great Giver.

Second day also known as Chu-rugala is a ritual entails pouring rice beer as an offering to Saljong, commencing from the residence of the Nokma or village headman.

It must be noted that the harvested crops cannot be taken without offering to Sun God.

During the occasion everyone drinks rice beer after it is offered to the gods.

The seconds day activities wrapped up with the rhythmic finale of the Rugala ceremony, resonating with the beats of 100 drums.

Additionally, the festival showcased indigenous games and cultural competitions as other notable highlights.

Wangala is one the grandest festival among all Garo celebrations, is intricately linked with Jhum Cultivation. Traditionally it is organised in the month of October or sometimes in November.

This festival is celebrated in each traditional village throughout the Garo Hills, with the 100 Drums Wangala Festival serving as an occasion that highlights traditional dances and hosts competitions among ten chosen villages.
