Guwahati, Dec 7: Members of the INDIA bloc from Manipur have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the strife-torn state or hold talks with political parties from the region in New Delhi before the end of 2024.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, the INDIA bloc members called for “proactive engagement” to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur, which has been reeling from ethnic violence and unrest for months.
The leaders revealed that they were denied permission to hold a sit-in protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday. “Unfortunately, we can’t practise our right to protest against the unprecedented turmoil,” said Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra Singh, who was part of the delegation of leaders from 10 political parties representing the INDIA bloc.
Kshetrimayum Shanta, the convenor of the 10-party coalition, confirmed that the Delhi Police had refused permission for the protest. Despite the setback, Meghachandra Singh asserted that the movement for justice and peace would continue in “different forms.”
The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, has been vocal about the Centre’s response to the crisis in Manipur, demanding greater accountability and immediate intervention. With the year drawing to a close, their latest appeal signals mounting pressure on the government to address the volatile situation in the northeastern state.
The ethnic violence, which erupted in May 2024, has led to loss of lives, displacement of thousands, and destruction of property. Repeated calls for dialogue and peace-building initiatives have yet to yield substantial progress.
It remains to be seen whether Prime Minister Modi will heed the INDIA bloc’s request for direct engagement, a move that many believe could help restore stability in Manipur.
