Itanagar, Oct 28: In a stirring tribute to commemorate the 62nd Walong Day, the Indian Army organized a half marathon on Sunday in Walong, Arunachal Pradesh, to honor the courage and sacrifices of soldiers who fought during the historic Battle of Walong in 1962. The event brought together 558 runners, uniting members of the Indian Armed Forces, ITBP, BRO, and civilians from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, including enthusiastic women and children participants.
The marathon was flagged off by Subedar Narinder Singh Rawat, an Olympian and Commonwealth marathon runner, who lent an air of prestige to the occasion. The participants tackled a challenging course set against the serene backdrop of the Lohit Valley, with steep inclines and sharp descent that tested their physical and mental endurance.
The marathon featured three race categories—21 km, 10 km, and 5 km—allowing participants of various skill levels to compete. Winners in each category received medals and cash prizes as a mark of appreciation for their dedication and achievement. To celebrate the participants’ efforts, all runners were also presented with commemorative T-shirts.
This commemorative event not only honored the sacrifice of Indian soldiers at Walong in 1962 but also strengthened the bond between the Armed Forces and local communities, celebrating unity, resilience, and respect for the nation’s defenders.
