India’s Constitution saved by Opposition’s staggering number in Parliament, says Saleng

Williamnagar, July 9: New Lok Sabha MP from Tura, Saleng A Sangma, hailed voters support saying their endorsement brought in the largest number of opposition MPs to Parliament and prevented a change to the Constitution of India by the ruling BJP alliance.

Saleng said this during a special felicitation for him at Williamnagar organised by the District Congress Committee on Tuesday afternoon at the district auditorium.

“Today our opposition numbers stand very strong at 236 MPs. Our own Congress MPs have risen to 101 with two Independent MPs joining our party. Our Constitution has been saved,” said the new Tura MP.

Dismissing any talk of relaxation post victory, Saleng said that real work would now need to begin.

Attacking the BJP in the new Lok Sabha, he was critical of the ruling NDA alliance for attempting to subdue the voices of North East MPs.

He pointed to last week’s Parliament session in which he accused the ruling NDA of delaying the slots for North East MPs, particularly Manipur, to block the Congress MPs from raising the issue of atrocities perpetrated in that state.

“Manipur continues to be a burning issue and yet when the time came for our MP Dr Bimol from Inner Manipur to speak, they delayed it to close to midnight. That is why I raised a Point of order with the Speaker and gave him our time,” recalled Saleng Sangma.

He was critical of the perception made out against north east people in other parts of the country and said the region’s MPs plan to discuss this issue in a sitting in August.

Taking on the Modi government over its claims of providing the largest funding for the development of the North East, Saleng said it was not showing on the ground.

“BJP govt gives big talk about huge funding to north east. But is it showing? The floods in the plain belt and North Garo Hills has taken place. Ministers have come and shown solidarity. But Meghalaya got zero funds when it came to flood control measures from the centre,” alleged the Tura MP.
