Shillong, April 7: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday announced that the government has sanctioned Rs 15 crore for setting up of an Indigenous Cultural Centre at Mawkhar.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the Shad Suk Mynsiem, Sangma said, “As we have always stated that the cultural aspect of our traditions needs to be preserved and need to be promoted and it is in line with that thought process that we are having the Indigenous Cultural Centre. Approximately about Rs 15 crores has been sanctioned for it.”
“By next month we should be laying the foundation. We thought will lay this month itself but as we all know that April is not a very auspicious month hence, we will be doing in the month of May,” he added.
Sangma said that he is happy that the government finally is being able to fulfill this long pending demand of the Seng Khasi.

According to him, the government is also supporting and putting up different cultural centres from larger ones to even smaller ones.
“Like recently I was in Karbi area and I had announced Rs 50 Lakhs for their Cultural Centre. I have given the Rabha community also the Kooch, Hajong community. So different communities that are there which are working towards preserving their culture, the government is more than happy to support and work with them in their endeavour to preserve the culture of the people of our state,” Sangma said.
Stating this is a new project altogether, the CM said, “There might be some part of renovation but this is a new project altogether. We wanted to be very interactive; we want to be very technology based. So, I hope that it will become a good project. At the same time, my personal opinion is that I feel the very field has to be renovated, I feel that it has got its own significant and lot of tourists are coming here. So therefore, the sitting areas can be easily expanded and most space can be created for the people who are participating in the dance. This is again something that I am very keen to work on and I will be speaking to the in the organizing committee to help us and work so that we can improve the overall infrastructure here in this Weiking filed also.”
