International Day of Drug Abuse: Program organised at Tura’s District library Auditorium, speech by DC Jagdish Chelani

Tura, June 26: A program on “International day against drug abuse & illicit trafficking” was organised by the District Mental Health Programme in collaboration with the District Administration, Social Welfare Department and Addiction Treatment Facility, West Garo Hills, Tura on Monday


The program was organsied at the District library Auditorium, Tura with the theme ” people first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention”.

During the event, many schools students, teachers and the officer from other line- deprtments were also present.

The program commenced with a welcome song by the DC office staff.

Also, Jagdish Chelani, Deputy Commissioner addressed the gathering at the event.

He said this fight against drugs is a UN Gen assembly initiative. Drugs infects the young most as well as the adults. He also spoke about the legal and illegal drugs
Chelani further said that there is a Golden triangle trade route in World. He also cited several examples related to this issue.

Jagdish Chelani said the Meghalaya Police department organised 200 Awarness programs 1 month prior to this day. He also said that due to cannabis, there are atleast 2.5 lakh drug addicts in the state. He also said that there are rehab centres in the disctrict, and can help them come back to the mainstream.

He also urged the citizens to create awareness about drugs and it’s abuses.

A small skit was also performed by the Donbosco Scholl students on Drug abuse.

Amera Tesrame S Sangma, Councillor Civil Hospital Tura, also gave a detailed presentation on Drugs, drugs abuse classification, common risk factors for teen drug abuse, dependency, withrawal symptoms, stages of addiction, short term effects.

Walsal M Momin, DSP CBPS, WGH told the gathering about how drugs reach NorthEast India via Neighbouring Countries.

He said that people who sells drugs don’t usually consume, they search for vulnerable areas to supply and sell these substances.

Taking about the punishments he said, for consuming of cocaine etc is 1 year and for consuming cannabis etc is 6 months.

Highlighting the issue of Drunken Drive and Rash driving, he said under section 175MVI-

  • Dangerous Driving – Rs 1000 – Upto Rs 5000
  • Drunken Driving – Rs. 2000 – Upto Rs 10, 000
  • Speeding/Racing- Rs 500 – Upto Rs 5000

Hemarita Ch Sangma, District Welfare Officer also gave a small presentation on Tennage pregnancy. She told the gathering on how the new law on Child marriage act has changed the age of marriage for women to 21 years.

Samuel ch marak, SDSEO cum Jt. DMC TURA of Education Dept also provided a presentation on School Dropout in the District.

Dr. Rev. Wetterfield R. Marak(Retd. Pastor, TBC) who was the chief guest of the event also talked about his experiences.
