International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Rights of PwDs take centerstage in South West Garo Hills

Ampati, Dec 3: Dobol Lake English School, under Rerapara C&RD Block, South West Garo Hills, hosted the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday. Over 180 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) from across the district participated in the program, organized by the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, Ampati.

The event began with a warm welcome and an introductory address by Zanera Marak, District Social Welfare Officer, Ampati. Dr. Norimchi R Marak, Senior Medical and Health Officer in charge of Melim PHC, served as the Chief Guest. Dr. Marak emphasized the importance of personal hygiene for good health and encouraged participants to maintain cleanliness for overall well-being.

Tanya Derimchi Ch Marak, Legal cum Probation Officer, DCPU Ampati, spoke about the rights of PwDs, highlighting that they comprise 16% of the global population and 2.2% of India’s population. She urged PwDs to obtain disability certificates and access government-provided benefits. She also stressed the importance of inclusivity and the need to combat discrimination, noting that the Constitution safeguards the rights of all citizens, including educational rights for PwDs.

Salen Marak, a participant and PwD, shared his personal experiences, particularly the challenges faced while seeking employment. He highlighted the 4% job reservation for PwDs and requested officials to address their concerns and improve access to facilities.

Begimme G Sangma, Case Worker from the One Stop Centre, Ampati, drew attention to the issue of sexual harassment faced by PwDs and the need for their protection and empowerment.

The program also included games and sports activities for PwDs, with prizes distributed to winners. All participants received gifts as tokens of love and care, and free health screenings were conducted during the event.

The celebration reflected a commitment to promoting inclusivity, raising awareness about the rights of PwDs, and ensuring their active participation in society.
